Overview

Penang Bistro @Senayan City brings a vibrant taste of Malaysia to the heart of Jakarta’s bustling shopping district. Located conveniently on Jl. Asia Afrika in Senayan City mall, this Malaysian restaurant offers a warm and spacious setting, making it an ideal spot for families, friends, and anyone craving authentic Southeast Asian flavors.

The menu highlights an impressive range of classic dishes that celebrate Malaysia’s rich culinary heritage. Signature items such as Nyonya Nasi Lemak and Prata with Beef Curry are thoughtfully prepared, capturing the balance of spices and textures that define Malaysian home cooking. The Penang Prawn Mee and Kangkung Belacan stand out with their intricate layers of flavor, offering a satisfying depth without overwhelming the palate.

Guests often praise the generous portions, like what Dessy Febrina notes about the comforting Singaporean Laksa Udon, a dish that combines silky noodles in a rich, aromatic broth—perfect for those seeking hearty, soul-soothing meals. Meanwhile, Andre Bastary’s observations on the crispy beef and Singaporean crispy sotong highlight the restaurant’s delightful interplay between sweet, salty, and sour tastes, encouraging diners to mix dishes for a well-rounded experience.

The space at Penang Bistro is notably more open compared to other eateries in the mall, creating a relaxed atmosphere complemented by attentive staff who maintain cleanliness and comfort. This environment suits families well, as Dollan Dolan points out with appreciation for kid-friendly options like the flavorful fried rice and unique lemongrass-lychee tea, which includes refreshing lime leaves, adding a subtle twist to traditional beverages.

Quality and authenticity shine through each plate—N Liang shares enthusiasm for the buttery, crispy yet chewy roti cane, calling it the best they have tasted, while also commenting on the well-balanced oyster omelette and seafood Penang char kway teow. For lovers of Malay cuisine, Yuki Syamsu highlights the tender duck and lamb chop dishes, as well as the distinctive belacan-infused offerings that lend a bold punch of umami and aroma, typical of the region’s cooking style.

While prices lean toward the higher side for a casual dining experience, Penang Bistro compensates with a satisfying combination of flavors, ambiance, and portion sizes. It’s a place where Malaysian staples come alive through fresh ingredients, skillful preparation, and a welcoming atmosphere. Whether stopping by after a shopping trip or gathering with loved ones for a flavorful feast, Penang Bistro @Senayan City remains a solid choice for an authentic taste of Malaysia in Jakarta.

Penang Bistro has a pretty great menu everywhere, but you have to consider the whole selection. Crispy beef, black pepper beef, Singaporean crispy sotong are all pretty tasty dishes. They’re all pretty sweet though, so mix them up with some veggies and salty and sour stuff.

It's a pretty spacious resto compared to other restos around food area. The staff keep the place clean and wipe tables after customers. Their fried kwetiau is halal without loosing its flavor. Their lemongrass/lychee tea is different because of the lime leaves in it. Their fried rice is kid friendly so it is a good break for parents after window shopping. The roti canai tissue with cheese and milk is okay since I do not really care for cheese on it. However, some like cheese in their dessert. Overall it is a decent resto in the mall.

Food tasted great, not too oily and not too salty. Oyster omelette was quite good although the oysters were small in size but it was quite a lot on the omelette served so it was worth the price. Fried Chicken with Terasi was fantastic, and their seafood penang char kway teow was also good! One more menu that really makes us want to return is their roti cane! Really buttery, crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. Best cane that I have ever tasted!

Serving home cooking malay cuisine. Liked the crunchy squid, prata and lamb curry also must have, and anything belacan were very nice. Duck and lamb chop were tender, not too gamey, very flavorful. One of the best Malay restaurant in Jakarta. A bit pricey though for casual restaurant.
